About Attitude

Launched in March 1994, Attitude is the best-selling gay magazine in the UK and Europe and the world’s biggest LGBTQ media brand. The print title is sold in 31 countries worldwide, and has been translated into native language in Belgium, the Netherlands, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. In digital form, the magazine is available to download to a phone, tablet or desktop and has readers in over 120 countries.

For more than 25 years, Attitude has garnered a reputation for major exclusives – it was the magazine to which George Michael gave his first interview as an out, gay man, the only to which Sir Elton John and David Furnish spoke about their then impending marriage and the first (and only) LGBTQ title ever to shoot and interview a member of the British Royal Family, making His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, a cover star back in 2016.

Our website at www.attitude.co.uk attracts as many as 1.7 million unique users a month, while across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube we have more than 1.2 million loyal, engaged social media followers.

The Attitude Awards are the biggest live event of their kind, held annually in London every October since 2012. Previous attendees have included everyone from the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, Kylie Minogue and Cher to Laverne Cox, Whoopi Goldberg and Sam Smith.

The Attitude PRIDE Awards, meantime, have been presented since 2015 and laud those within the LGBTQ community who have triumphed over tragedy or who serve selflessly to make the world a safer, kinder and more accepting place.

Attitude Pride at Home is a nine-day, two-weekend digital festival launched for Pride month (June) in 2020. Pride at Home content, on Attitude’s platforms alone, received 25.9m impressions and reached 18.5m unique viewers. We posted more than 100 video assets during the festival that were viewed more than 745,000 times, with a total viewing time of more than 6,000 hours.

The Attitude Magazine Foundation is a registered charity (number 1180876) and, since founding in summer 2018, has raised and distributed more than £250,000 for LGBTQ causes large and small. Our foundation is the beneficiary of Attitude’s live events, be they physical or in digital form, and exists as our philanthropic CSR project, to give back to the community we are proud to be part of, and to represent. Fact-checking policy

Attitude’s writers and columnists are professional journalists conversant with publishing law and both they, and our sub-editing team, make every effort to confirm – prior to publication – the accuracy of facts or quotations used in any and every story. Our writers must be precise with their words, headlines and cited URLs. They understand that words have power and act responsibly. In doing so, they must verify the information they gather. This includes identifying information such as names and positions, but also includes factual statements and accounts. Our writers conduct their own fact-checking using their own judgment guided by our ethics policy. We will use fact checkers in circumstances we believe warrant doing so.

Ethics policy

Our ethics policy gives our employees and contributors guidelines on our business ethics and stance on various matters. They are trusted to use judgment, but we provide guidance to fall back on if anyone is unsure about how to act. This policy applies to everyone we employ or have business relations with. This includes individual people such as employees, interns and volunteers, but also business entities.

We base our business code of ethics on common principles of:

  • Respect for others. Treat people as you want to be treated. Be kind, polite and understanding.
  • Integrity and honesty. Tell the truth and avoid any wrongdoing to the best of your ability. Be honest and transparent when you act in ways that impact other people.
  • Justice. Make sure you’re objective and fair and don’t disadvantage others. Don’t act in a way that exploits others, their hard work or their mistakes. Give everyone equal opportunity and speak up when someone else doesn’t. Do not discriminate in any way.
  • Lawfulness. Know and follow the law – always. Respect confidentiality and data protection. Following laws regarding fraud, bribery, corruption and any kind of assault is a given.
  • Competence and accountability. Work hard, be responsible for your work and your actions. We all mistakes, it’s important to own up to them.
  • Teamwork. Collaborate and ask for help. Working well with others is a virtue, rather than an obligation. Be generous with your expertise and knowledge. Be open to learning and evolving.

Corrections policy

All articles will have been fact-checked prior to publication by the author/sub-editor, which should ensure that content errors are not present. Nonetheless, for a variety of reasons some articles may need to be corrected after publication. Such reasons can range from minor typos and small errors through to more serious issues concerning ethics and copyright. We handle different kinds of errors in the following ways:

  • Amendment. For minor content, we may directly amend the article if the error is reported or subsequently found. We reserve the right to decide what constitutes a minor issue and whether a note or correction article is necessary.
  • Correction article. Where an error would affect the conclusions of an article (but not the validity of the findings), or contains incorrect information, a correction article can be posted. Correction articles are used to formally correct the record and to ensure errors are properly highlighted. The original article will contain a banner that links to the correction to alert readers.
  • Retraction. Retractions are used to remove a published piece from the record. Retractions are used when: editors have clear evidence that the article’s findings are unreliable, either as a result of misconduct or honest error; a story has previously been published elsewhere without proper cross-referencing, permission or justification; article publication constitutes plagiarism; the article is unethical. Retractions will be drafted and posted in the same way as correction articles.
  • Withdrawal. In rare circumstances, articles will be withdrawn and removed from the site.

Attitude (often stylised as attitude) is a Britishgay lifestyle magazine owned by Stream Publishing Limited. It is sold worldwide as a physical magazine, and as a digital download for the iPad and iPhone via the App Store, and for Android devices via the Android Market. History of ownership[edit]

The owner of Stream Publishing, Darren Styles, had previously launched the successful attitudeawards for the brand (in October 2012) and acquired the English-language rights to Winq, the luxury lifestyle magazine for gay men, from its Amsterdam-based owner (the Media Mansion) in August 2013.

In February 2010 former Conservative party leader David Cameron appeared on the cover of attitude giving his first interview to a gay publication.

For the August 2009 issue, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe gave his first interview to a gay publication in which he announced his support for British political party the Liberal Democrats. He said, 'I just loathe homophobia. It's just disgusting and animal and stupid and it's just thick people who can't get their heads around it and are just scared. I grew up around gay people entirely. How to hack a minecraft server console. I was the only child in my class who had any experience of homosexuality or anything like that.'

In addition to celebrity interviews the magazine also includes serious features on a range of subjects, which have included the plight of gay asylum seekers and the rise of the far Right in Eastern Europe, the US Presidential election campaign as well as real life editorial such as male rape and body image issues. In May 2005, on the eve of the UK general election, the magazine interviewed Tony Blair for the cover. In April 2008 attitude took then Mayor of London Boris Johnson to task about his comments that 'if gay marriage was okay – and I was uncertain of that issue – then I saw no reason why a union should not therefore be consecrated between three men, as well as two men; or indeed three men and a dog', a claim Johnson tried to justify as loose talk on Newsnight or Question Time,[citation needed] until reminded of a passage in his own book[which?] as a direct source.

attitude frequently acquires exclusive interviews within the gay market. These exclusives include Daniel Radcliffe's only gay press interview, Madonna's first worldwide press interview for her Confessions On A Dance Floor album, Elton John and David Furnish's only print interview for their civil partnership in December 2005, Heath Ledger's only gay press interview, Take That's first print interview after re-forming, Kylie Minogue, who always gives attitude her launch interviews and Robbie Williams's only cover story interview on the release of his Greatest Hits album. The longest stretch straight celebrities have not appeared on the cover is three months. Then-Editor Matthew Todd previously suggested there were not enough famous gay people to have them on the cover constantly and has made a point of putting celebrities on the cover such as Beth Ditto (first gay woman on an Attitude cover) and Kele Okereke (first black gay man on an Attitude cover).[3]

In 2016 Prince William became the first member of Britain's royal family to appear on the cover of a gay magazine when he appeared on the cover of the July issue of Attitude; in the cover story, he also became the first British royal to openly condemn the bullying of the gay community.
